These guys have a project at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Dar es Salaam to translate Open Office into Kiswahili. The first version is already done, menus and whatnot, and a spell checker. They had to ‘invent’ new translations for some technical terms so it’s helping the language to develop too.

My colleagues here are laughing aloud but they are also asking me serious questions about how they might contribute. Way to go, guys! (Thanks to Vini for putting me on to this)

I installed Open Office 2.0 (English version) on two Apple iBooks this weekend, and last week on an old Toshiba PC laptop running windows 98. Of course it works faster on the new Macs but it looks just the same on both and works like a dream.
