An email from Denise says:
I discovered on my recent bill that I pay 43p to receive a text from abroad, then 53p to reply. i.e. nearly ?1 if I receive and reply to a text. It is madness.
I haven’t sent anybody in the UK any text since I received this. Can you check out how much it costs to send and receive texts on your network and post your findings in comments here please? If you get charged nearly 10bob (british) to receive a text from me, I could clear out some of you with pay-as-you-go cards by just spamming you with SMS in one evening!

I buy my text allowances on a bundle to cut costs but this doesn’t include non-uk texts, and i haven’t found anybody that does non-uk texts cheaply … poor denise, i would be pissed off too - especially considering how many texts i get/receive from malaysia

I’m on Orange pay monthly… buy texts in packs of 30 and they work out 8p to send. Nothing to receive!
Sometimes costs me to receive voice calls when I’m roaming abroad, and calling from abroad isn’t cheap, but I only do it if it’s an "emergency".
Incidentally (and at the risk of sounding like an advert), when I phoned Mark’s mobile on his birthday I went via telediscount, who are very cheap for most calls aboard… current rate for calls to Mobiles in Kenya is 20p/minute, via 0911 2 190 190 (these change from time to time as people like Telewest keep blocking them, apparently).
(The only hassle I had with calling this number is that apparently 0911 is some kind of premium rate and these were blocked from my line until I got a PIN to let me through…)
My partner Isabel uses Telediscount all the time to phone home to Germany… mind you, germany’s only a penny a minute, which is same as local-rate calls here!

i have O2, and apart from 100 text messages free every month, i pay 10p to send (plus vat) and nothing to receive whatever the country! I d be bankrupt with the amount of text i get from home!!
